Photography and Leading Lines
Tips & Tricks – “Leading Lines”

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate
HOW IT WORKS: A good practice in taking any picture is to help bring attention to what you, “the photographer” want the viewer to focus on. This is done in a number of ways but one of the simplest methods is to use leading lines. In simple terms using “Leading Lines” is the act of using objects, structures, horizons and just about any object with a line to help point or lead the viewer’s eye inside the photograph.
These lines are often used to point or lead your eye to a specific point, but can also be used to simply give the eye something to follow in the image even though they don’t always “point” to a single object. This is often done best using vanishing points and shooting at an angle which helps to cause perspective lines or a vanishing point to appear. These 2 pictures (above and below) show leading lines pointing to a subject to bring attention or focus to a specific area in the photograph.

Media of the Month

TITLE: “Just Us”
PHOTOGRAPHER: John Pottenger
TECHNICAL: Shutter: 1/100, Aperture: f3.5, ISO: 250, Focal Length: 28mm – Handheld with 2 remote controlled “off camera” strobe lights.
THE STORY: How do you take good formal pictures when it’s below freezing outside? You get creative indoors! This past January Coastline Studios was hired to photograph a wedding, and outdoor pictures were not an attractive option for a number of reasons. After some traditional formal shots were taken with the family and wedding party, everyone left the room except the newlywed couple. With some creative placement of the 2 mono lights in this dimly lit church, it was simply a matter of finding the right angle to make this composition pop.
