Tips & Tricks – “Triangles”
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate
HOW IT WORKS: When posing people or objects try to arrange them in triangles. This goes hand in hand with many of the photo “tips & tricks” from 2006 by way of breaking symmetry and creating odd numbered compositions. This helps give the eye a pattern or path to follow and draws the viewer to dwell on the image longer.
In the 1st image above there is a single triangle connecting the brother and his two sisters, where in the 2nd image there are actually three possible triangles (or groups) between all of the family members. The key is to avoid having people’s heads right over the top of another person, and trying to breakdown larger groups of people into smaller odd numbered groups or triangles as seen above. The larger the group, the more you need to break things down into smaller odd numbered groups to create a more creative pose. This of course takes a lot of work and creativity and is not as easy as it sounds, but is always worth the effort. From Behind the Lens is a monthly newsletter made available by Coastline Studios. THE STORY: This behind the scenes look shows how Coastline Studios created this unique lighting pattern to light artist Christina Adam’s hand made jewelry. Using a strobe studio light wrapped in foil, along with some experimenting and shaping of the foil, this beautiful image was created.
